I think I win in the retail WTF competition today...
Recap:  check out chick - today, serving an express line (with 2 queues at once)

So, I think I have the winner today, at least in retail circles.  It managed to stun my coworkers, for a good few seconds each, before they managed to respond.  This is an express queue, with 2 people waiting in one queue, and one person waiting in the other.

The customer's complaint:  I was going too fast.  Apparently starting to serve the next customer, after giving the customer their single small item, receipt and change, was being rude, and was attempting to get him out of my shop.

*headdesk*

I just goes to show that you can't win. No matter how well you do your job, somebody will get their cock in a knot over something stupid.

oh noez!! not time management and efficiency...TOGETHER?!?!?!

I've gotten that before both in retail and in a financial institution. I'd like to pretend it's me wanting to waste as little of the customer's time as possible, but really, I think I just want to go back to not dealing with the public as soon as possible.

I've had that happen. I used to scan 59.9 items per minute according to the reports. (This store had new and super-fast scanners) A customer went up and complained that I was scanning so fast that I was "throwing her groceries".

When the (new) asst. mgr. came to talk to be about it, I shrugged and told him that she could go to any other cashier next time, but to avoid my co-workers J and N, because they went about as fast as I did.

At the grocery store I worked at, I scanned ~35 rpm (rings per minute) and people would constantly complain that I was throwing their groceries and I would be like "o.0 I make sure all your perishables get out of the way, what does it matter if the cans roll a little bit?"

I got that complaint once when I was cashiering, only it was a scammer trying to cause a problem so they could storm out with the packs of cigarettes they were holding (unpaid, back when cigarette cases were open to customers). Guess what? It worked. :-{

I used to get that when I cashiered at a grocery store, too! Except we didn't have the little conveyor belt that moves items from cashier to bagging area like many store do now, so if you wanted to slide things down and have room to keep ringing, you did have to put a little force behind it. But I was careful that I was never squashing or otherwise damaging anyone's food, and I even sorted food into bagging categories (frozen, meat, dry boxed goods, produce, cleaning products) as I went. People bitched anyways.

I did the same thing, and I didn't have those little conveyors, either. We had metal slides that were on an angle. I did work once with those stupid conveyor belts, and never wanted to do it again. :P Things don't slide on them, and the belt is too slow.

Y'know, it's funny, but to this day, when I unload the cart, I unload heavy stuff first, all the perishables together, etc. My husband won't even attempt to help me unload, because he knows that I won't criticize, but I'll move things around on the belt to make them "right".

I've had that it was before christmas and we had mega long queues and I could hear this old lady doing the loud I'm talking about you not TO you thing. "These queues are too long and those people are going too slowly" etc etc.

I get to the lady and I'm wizzing through her huge order becuse everything is scanning perfectly "YOUR GOING TOO FAST SLOW DOWN!"

Grrrr

I used to get people like that ALL. THE FREAKING. TIME.

"Man, these people gotta hurry up! I got places to go!"

*three customers and two minutes later, I get complainer rung up*

"Your total is $n"

"HOLD ON, I AIN'T DONE YET! YOU TRYIN'A RUSH ME OUTTA HERE OR SOMETHING?!"

*headcounter*

(and on another note: Top Gear FTW!)

I hated that! I think the idea behind it is that they want to watch you scan every single item to make sure you don't ring something twice or to make sure all the sale items ring up correctly. All it really accomplished was holding everyone else up, though.

I get glares for that one all the time. Usually when there's a lineup. -sigh-

You know you're just looking for something to bitch about when that's the only complaint you can find. D:

*shrugs* the supermarket where I used to work, that was customer service policy. Wait til the previous customer's picked everything up and turned away from you before you move on to the next customer. I thought it was nice.

*creepy*

Scan it slower... slower...

I thought that people would want to get out as soon as everything was bagged and paid for. Did this person want to spend the whole day in a grocery store?

Or any store. I should have read more carefully.
