Um.. what?
First customer of my shift last night at my department store. Note- we have very very limited space on our counter between our two registers. It is used mainly for items that need to be put back because a customer decided not to buy them or, occasionally, to hold small items for customer while they continue to shop. Also, my area is a separate room from the rest of the store where a bunch of sales things are gathered, so it's kinda a miss-mosh of various items.

Lady comes up, I have just clocked in.

Lady: *puts things on counter*
Me: Hi! Did you find everything okay today?
Lady: I have that stuff over there too. *gestures to the side of the counter we usually reserve for stuff needing to be put back*
Me: This stack?
Lady: NO! I didn't have those and that and WHERE ARE MY SOCKS?!
Me: *look at coworker #1 who has been there all day and is currently fighting with the other register that keeps locking up*
Coworker #1: Oh, they may have accidentally been put up, we can go grab more for you, what colors did you have?
Lady: I can't believe this! I spent 30 minutes picking out socks and you can't even hold them for me! I want your managers name! (note- she picked them out of a small rack of .99 socks that was right next to the register.. how she spent 30 minutes, I'll never know)

Lady proceeds to be completely unhelpful while my coworker #2 is trying to find what design socks she had. All the socks on the rack are the same, just different designs; pink, pink striped, etc.
Lady: BLUE!
Coworker #2: *holds up plain blue socks* These?
Lady: UGH NO! How stupid are you people?! You should remember! They were BLUE STRIPED!
...continue for about 5 minutes and 2 total pairs of socks.

Me: Okay, then is this all for you today?
Me: *scan scan scan*
Lady: *pays*
Lady: WAIT! I had candy up here too! I knew this wasn't everything! You bitches are useless!
Me: Ma'am, I'm sorry, it probably got put up, we have very limited space back here and that area is where we tend to put the things that need to be put away.
Lady: That's unacceptable! I want your managers name! You should have remember what I got!
Me: Her name is R.
Lady: G?!
Me: No, R.
Lady: Your name is Sarah? I'm reporting all your coworkers and I'm reporting you too. This is unacceptable!

After she finally left, my coworkers tell me she yelled "fat bitch" at coworker #1 when she was first in there because she was told she could only use her 15% off coupon ONCE and had left her stuff up there for over an hour.

What the fuck? Who pissed on HER Cheerios? Serious now though, that lady needs to be banned. How on Earth is that any way to speak to cashiers and shopworkers? You both bent over backwards to help, you admitted your mistake, you said you were sorry, but nope, she didn't want to know. I don't know why some people seem hell-bent on yelling at others and calling them names. The name calling especially wasn't called for. I get the 'bitch' word a lot too though. It's like... don't they have anything better to come up with? Seriously, if you say she acted like that to another co-worker as well, then you need to have words with management, see if they can't issue her with a permaban!

Oh man. The fact that she couldn't remember which socks she'd chosen, but you should is utterly ridiculous.

Oh yes, because our work station counters are only ever there to just hold customers items, since it takes too much effort to go get a basket or shopping cart. Just because you see an open counter ( or what you think is an open counter ) does NOT mean you can put your merchandise on it and walk away. When customers try that with me, I explain that I can't kepp an eye on it for them, that I HAVE to constantly keep the sales floor blocked / count inventory / help customers choose a wine, liquor, or beer / pack out items / take VERY heavy liquor boxes down from the overhead area using only a rickety ladder and my arms, and there is no guarantee that someone else isn't going to snag the stuff they want to buy, or stuff they brought in with them from the grocery store, or even their purses or kids ( whyyyyy do people leave their purses and kids at the counter and walk off?! Isn't that kind of asking for trouble?! ).

How was she allowed to remain? If we had received even a quarter of the abuse from a customer they would have been removed from the store. Why don't managers (duty or store) allow customers to treat staff as if they are less than animals?

I'm sorry but we need to start reclaiming manners again. as soon as she started cursing, I would have put all her stuff aside, politely but firmly explained that such behavior is NOT tolerated and she needs to leave now.

people need to be reminded that they are not the special snowflake that they delude themselves into being.

You're absolutely right.

WAIT! I had candy up here too! I knew this wasn't everything!

How about *she* remember everything she had?

With everyone else here... banned. Call MOD and get this "Give me your Manager's name now!" business over with.

I guess I've been watching too much Adventure Time, because everytime you said "unacceptable" I just imagained Lemongrab screaming. With that mental image I'm not sure I could have not laughed at this customer.
