Rrrrrrrrracism at the pizza place
Hey, lovelies! This is a suck on behalf of my coworkers as well as myself.

I live in Southern New Mexico, and we a have a lot of Mexican immigrants living here. So, naturally, language barrier things are a daily occurrence. It's not a big deal, it's just a part of living in a very diverse population. One of my managers, who we'll call Joe for the purposes of this entry, is a native Spanish speaker and has a very strong accent, but his English is fluent. He's aware of his accent and is very gracious when someone (like me, hehe) asks him to repeat something. Besides that, Joe is just a really sweet guy and very good at his job.

Yesterday we had an asshole of a customer who, despite living here, could just NOT DEAL with an accent. Y'know, the most common one 'round here. More common, in fact, than the standard flat American most of us white folks speak with.

Apparently the customer was ordering over the phone from Joe and started cussing him out for being a 'fucking wetback retard' who couldn't speak English. So Joe handed the phone over to my coworker "Sarah". Sarah has an American accent and tired to take this guy's order, but he wouldn't let up. Sarah somehow got the order down and into the system in between the jackass spouting racist nonsense.

Why we didn't refuse this guy service I don't know. Probably because our franchise owner doesn't give half a damn about the well-being of his employees.

Later, I delivered his pizza and got to listen to how we were all 'fucking retards' and how Joe was a 'fucking wetback' and yada yada yada. Insert more racist, offensive pile here. I was actually really scared of this guy, considering he was a pretty creepy, grungy looking dude in one of the scarier parts of town and he was cussing me out.

So I got his pizza to him as fast as possible, got the hell away in my car and started crying. Pretty awful way to start the workday for all of us :(

TL;DR: A racist jerk made me cry and made my coworkers unhappy.

Aside from all the racism, I think the customer was probably looking for someone/something to yell at/about that day, considering he kept yelling at 'Sarah' and then you.

If you had denied him service, would the owner have been upset?

I kind of agree. The guy was racist as hell but he also sounds like a right royal jackass who just felt like abusing anyone who got in his way. People like him make me sick.

As someone who's been manager, sometimes it takes time transition your head space from working to keep customers happy > to must keep us safe.

Suggest that the customer should maybe be fired if they act like that again, or that it really made it uncomfortable and what would management suggest to minimize your and the other employee's potential risk.

And since this is a rant community not a suggestion hotline: That sucks and I hope that he'll know exactly how bad he made it for you and regret it forever.

On the bright side, you have his phone # and address and can add him to the do-not-deliver list. Stiffed you, slandered you, close enough, right?

I'm so sorry you had to actually deliver to that asshole's house by yourself. I'd have been terrified too. Or terrified I'd have gotten myself fired for telling him to shut the fuck up :| Then again, there would have been no witnesses :p

If someone had been that abusive, I'd have wanted to refuse service. Last year a woman told my manager to 'get back to England' [were in Scotland] and my deputy instantly told her to get out.

Hello fellow New Mexican! Sorry, so rare to see people from this state on the internet. Yeah, it is surprising really how racist people can be in a state that has such a high population of non-whites.
