Mod Post: Black Friday
Ok, guys. So that we don't all clutter up everyone's feeds complaining about the shitty people on Black Friday and how much we hate Black Friday itself, please post all of your Black-Friday related stories as comments on this post.

Any Black Friday posts posted after this mod post will be deleted.

Thanks and have a safe day with as little stress as possible.

I hand out samples inside a Costco. Not entirely sure what to expect for my shift in a few hours. We'll see what happens.

The craziest thing I heard of happening at my store was that someone did a "hit and run" thing - accidentally smacked one of my coworkers on the mouth, hard enough for her lip to split open (she's OK). Nobody saw who did it and nobody apologized.

I work for a big box store that is Formerly Smiley Face and we have two stores in town (soon to be 3). A customer told another one of my coworkers she came to our store from the other one because a fistfight broke out over something (she didn't specify what it was for). Yikes! Things were civilized at my store... So I'm glad the split lip was the worst thing that happened at my store!

2012-11-23 05:31 pm (UTC) (Link)

People can be so terribly unaware. The worst is when they blame you! I had a co-worker when I worked at the Happiest Place on Earth that got his foot run over by a lady speeding through on one of those motorized wheelchairs. Broke his foot and she just shouted at him that he needed to watch where he was going. Then sped off before anyone could catch her.

It's made me irrationally angry at motorized wheelchairs... and also slightly afraid too! :S

I pledged not to go anywhere today..

2012-11-23 02:38 pm (UTC) (Link)

With Walmart and Target (and others) opening yesterday, I pledged not to go anywhere. I know it won't make much of a difference, but if enough people didn't show up, Thanksgiving would again be a day for families (hey, I can dream).

Tomorrow is "Shop Local" day, and that's what I plan on doing.

Good luck to all who have to deal with the public today. My thoughts are with you!

2012-11-23 03:04 pm (UTC) (Link)

I also made that pledge. I may break it if we have protestants at Walmart so I can take them coffee or something, but that would be it.

As I drove past Target at about 8:20 on my way home from dinner with friends, I saw a line going all the way down the front of the store. I was freezing my butt off in the car - I can't imagine why people would put up with waiting out in the cold and dark instead of staying home and supporting that petition that went around asking Target not to make their employees work on the holiday.

So glad I'm going to work at my non-customer service job this morning. Not going anywhere near a physical store until at least next week.

2012-11-23 03:39 pm (UTC) (Link)

I have to work this afternoon, and I'm really hoping that it's not that bad. Our mall opened at midnight and when my bf came home at 430 this morning, he said the store itself wasn't busy. I think we'll get a lot of traffic but our store isn't a traditional Black Friday Destination Store so to speak.

So we'll see.

2012-11-23 03:55 pm (UTC) (Link)

On the way to work we drove past our local mall and at 7am the car park was completely full! I work for a small private company and we're not having any sales today so it's going to be pretty dead. Fellow retail workers, my thoughts are with you!

2012-11-23 04:24 pm (UTC) (Link)

My family's not comfortable with the idea of starting Black Friday the day before (>_<) And even then, it felt weird going out to places at midnight. Of course by then our main Target was as busy as it is every other day (it's a secluded one, which is nice) but they had an EMS van on stand-by at one of the Targets closer to the main mall. Speaking of, the mall parking lot was balls-to-the-wall packed and we got lucky to get a spot close to one of the entrances. (@_@) A couple of the stores were only letting in a handful of people at a time, which meant huge lines stretching across several other stores. I thought it was for the capacity limit but my aunt mentioned that Black Friday would be a shoplifter's dream, and that was something I never thought of.

I saw tents by both of the Best Buys I passed on my way to my mom's yesterday though. Yikes.

Got adequate sleep though so I feel lucky. Sympathy for anyone in retail who didn't want to work today.

People here started camping on TUESDAY at Best Buy. TUESDAY. If you have to camp for two days you are no longer getting a good deal.

I live in Canada, but a lot of retailers are getting on the black friday bandwagon to keep customers from crossing the border to spend their money. Thankfully I don't work until 5 pm today, so if there is any craziness hopefully it will have died down by then. I really hope I don't have to work boxing day though. I told my manager I'd rather work xmas eve than boxing day!

It's INSANE how many Black Friday sales I'm seeing in Vancouver today. Fortunately, the rain is keeping most of the hordes in bed, it seems :)

I worked a 9pm to 5am shift. But hey, I got through it! So happy about that. =P

Could have been better, could have been worse. Would have preferred if the sales were actually on FRIDAY, so I didn't feel like I had to rush through Thanksgiving to give myself a bit of time to relax before I went to work. X_X

No one went too crazy where I work, though I did find a large pile of sale ads on one of the shelves a few hours after we opened, when things started to die down. Apparently one person brought a huge bag full of Black Friday ads from EVERYWHERE and decided to leave it on a shelf, or left it behind or something.

Edited at 2012-11-23 06:57 pm (UTC)

2012-11-23 07:12 pm (UTC) (Link)

I worked Thanksgiving when the sales started (one of the places that started their sales at 8.) Stuff was already out on the salesfloor in shrinkwrapped pallets before the sales began, and despite printed signs saying the sale price was not yet in effect, employees telling customers they could not go through the merchandise before 8, and announcements to that effect... people were still pawing through the pallets and putting what they wanted in their carts. A few even made it up to the registers.

Since this was my first 'Black Friday' (even if it was actually Thursday), I tried to mostly stay out of the way since I didn't really know what I was supposed to be doing, and answered what questions I could about where things were or might be. They were going to be handing out some of the TVs on sale over by my department, so I wound up helping watch the lines. We had to explain to people that we were only handing out as many tickets as we had TVs, and that they would have to wait in line until 10 pm- they were allowed 15 mins. to use the bathroom or whatever else they needed to do, but they would have to give us back their ticket until they returned (in case they didn't come back).

Even so, when they started handing out the TVs to the ticket holders in line, people without tickets were trying to get into the line to get a TV as well.

Still! Although it was really crowded and noisy, from what I know, no fights broke out or whatnot, surprisingly (and thankfully). Then again, we had the state police at the store with us, so there was that.

2012-11-23 08:14 pm (UTC) (Link)

We did the ticket things for TVs too. Did you have the same issue that we had? People who took tickets but never came? I didn't work back by the TVs, but apparently like 7 TVs still hadn't been picked up as of midnight, so they just started giving the TVs to people who wanted them. They did wait a few hours before doing so, but if you were in line outside and got a ticket before we even opened, and haven't shown up by midnight...well, it's safe to assume you probably aren't coming.

Plus I think a lot of people left because they didn't want to wait in the long checkout lines. I don't know what they expected, honestly. And from what I can tell the lines moved pretty quickly for how busy it was. XD

-Definitely found a few big screen TVs abandoned in the section I was working in...because TVs totally go with bedding and curtains and the like-

Everything in our store is on sale: 20% off sale items, 30% off full price items, and oh yeah, we're liquidating so if there's only two shoes left in a style, you get 10% off of that. PLUS if you bought two shoes, you got 10% off your whole purchase, three shoes got you 15% off, 4 or more was 20% off the whole thing!! On top of everything else!

No less than six customers, after I explained the sale: "ok, but what's the real deal? The black Friday sale? You had something better this morning right?"

"why is its so BUSY in here? I NEED HELP finding SHOES."
"why is everything final sale? These are for CHRISTMAS. What if they don't fit?"
" are these on sale? What about these. Or these? Are these on sale?"
" why don't you have my size????"

I am so done with retail. Praying everyone survives!

My store is in a mall and I almost got ran over this morning (worked 12am-7am, got to go home early! \o/) trying to get into the store. It was fucking nuts, omg.

2012-11-23 09:22 pm (UTC) (Link)

Lady snapped at me for answering my coworker's question no less than twice in her $1k transaction. Lady, if you're in that much of a hurry then you should have saved our store for last. Our sale goes ALL DAY.If you really really needed to make it to whatever store's sale ended at noon then you should have hit those first. I'm not making my other cashier (although new-ish and why he was on register I'll never know) and one customer wait for your entire transaction to finish so I can tell him a two-second "yes.". Seriously, good tidings and cheer and all that jazz.

2012-11-23 09:54 pm (UTC) (Link)

First Black Friday I've been off for TEN YEARS. It's nice to be out of Big Box Retail and into much smaller boxed retail... :)
Relatively uneventful shopping day at the local mall, the only minor irritation was the people who'd stand in line and wait 10 minutes or more, get to the register, and ask the cashier how much the things were in their hands. In 10 minutes, you couldn't have whipped out your calculator on the phone and punched in "$x.xx X .30 = y" to find out how much off you'd be getting? Srsly? That would have been the minimum discount and if you didn't want to pay that, then put that shit back and GET OUTTA THA LINE!

I could recall several incidents from the past 10 Black Fridays, but the one I choose is one from my FIRST EVAR. We clearly stated we would not match any BF prices OR do price matches from any previous purchases. BF is the one day of exception at Penultimate Purchase*.

Still, Douchebag McGee showed up at my register with three or four things he wanted us to match to Tesla Town*. I politely, quietly, informed him that we were instructed to not match prices and that it even said it on the front page of their ad. We could not call them because they wouldn't answer their phones during the first big rush, hence we couldn't check stock/verify models... he said "Listen, I was here last year and your managers did it for me. Just get one of them over here, they know me." I rolled my eyes after I turned away to page an MOD over. Sure enough, they knew him and sighed loudly at me, telling me to just price match for the guy because they'd done it before. It put a bad taste in my mouth. I should have realized it was the first of MANY times a manager would not be backing me up on company policy. One of the reasons their stock is hanging below $15 a share these days, I suppose!

Happy Black Friday to all, and to all a lovely night.

Isn't it lovely when managers would rather break store policy than make a Speshul Snowflake unhappy?

Some lady threw her receipt at me in drive thru, all but screaming at me "I did NOT! get my Black Friday DEAL!" And was appalled when I told her that my McDonald's did not have a Black Friday deal.

So, let me get this straight lady, you came through my drive thru, saw the many signs that we have, none of which advertised this magical Black Friday Deal that you claim we have, and get pissy at me? And as far as I am aware, no other McD's in our area was offering a Black Friday deal.

What the hell!?

I... guh. >.< People.

2012-11-23 11:32 pm (UTC) (Link)

I work at hellbucks coffee in a mall, and opened 11 PM- 7:30 AM (but ended up getting to go home around 6:45 yaaaay!).

I think the worst we had (other than just being busy to the point of complete insanity), was some nutbag lady yelling at us that she ordered a large and that we were cheating her because our store was using different cups than the other stores and they were smaller. We had no idea what to say to her, other than we're sorry but that we use the exact same cups as EVERY SINGLE STORE so that's literally not possible.

She was railing that she was going to bring in the cup from her car to prove it to us, but we never saw her again.

2012-11-23 11:57 pm (UTC) (Link)

I can just imagine her going to her car, pulling out the cup and going "HA, LET'S TEACH THOSE EMPLOYEES THAT I AM RIG...oh..." and driving off in defeat. Somehow that image just makes me giggle.

We don't have sales at Big Famous Toy Store, and I'm in a quiet section, so it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Still, some customers got mad because we were the THIRD REGISTER THAT WAS CLOSED. (Bull. It was shift change, yes, but the lead cashier was closing us out ONE BY ONE, so if you were at the THIRD CLOSED REGISTER, then you were taking your sweet time going between them!) Lead cashier was peeved, to say the least.

The best bit was on Tday, actually. Lady comes up to my coworker, and insists that she needs an employee discount. She has 'forgotten' her card, but she works at Big Famous Toy Store Las Vegas. My coworker calls me over. My first, unfiltered reaction: "There is no BFTS LV. It closed years ago." Lady: "OH, they JUST reopened! I work there!!!!" Me, in my head: *then how in the hell do you have Tday off, in NYC, and you are buying stuff at OUR store* Me, out loud: "Well, I can't give discounts without the card, shall I call a manager?" Lady: "Oh, no, nevermind."

....Lady, we are the ONLY Big Famous Toy Store in the ENTIRE WORLD. We KNOW THIS. It is our special thing. UNIQUE. ...Try it at our sister stores, the ones with the bad grammar in their name. They won't know, we're only owned by the same company. But trying it at the ONLY BFTS... really? I mean, do we look that stupid?

2012-12-02 09:17 am (UTC) (Link)

dont you LOVE when people claim to work for another branch, like that somehow makes them able to do anything they want? we have a regular customer who constantly tells us that he used to work at one of our locations in georgia, and expects that to mean he can cut in line, get discounts, or just plain not have to pay if he doesn't have the money. he caught my manager at a bad time last week, when he was about $.07 short for a purchase he was trying to make. if someone is within $.05, sometimes i'll let them slide - we have a very popular $.74 item that a ton of people just hand us 3 quarters for and walk out the door, so i know it will all even out. but i am by no means obligated to, plus, if i don't like you? that's not helping your chances. so when i politely told him no, he turned to my manager, who happened to be right there but was in the middle of an audit, and she didn't even look at him - just snapped "NO." he was not happy. i had to hold back my giggles.

First Black Friday I have worked in about four years. It was busy but lucky for my place of work nice people all day long.

I work in a grocery store. Today was actually pretty quiet for us, but the few days before Thanksgiving were absolute chaos.

2012-11-24 12:54 am (UTC) (Link)

Yeah, this is the time of year I don't miss working in a grocery store. It's all I can do not to go totally WTFface at ppl who are buying a 24 lb frozen turkey the day before Thanksgiving. Yes, it's possible to "speed thaw" a turkey in water, but a bird that size isn't gonna fit in most home sinks, and you have to completely cover the bird in water to ensure the "speed thaw".

My adorable little fair trade store had to open at midnight, because the mall to which we belong opened its doors at midnight and to not do likewise would have resulted in a fine. I volunteered to work the overnight shift so that I could be done before it got too crazy. It was incredibly boring - we were one of only three stores in the outdoor section that opened (the others either have different leases or just chose to accept the fine), and it was bitterly cold so very few people actually ventured out to where we were. The night dragged on. I wouldn't have minded except that by the end of it I'd been up for 22 hours straight.

We were delightfully drama-free, but I did hear from one customer that there had been a stampede inside the mall at a store known for its overpriced undergarments modeled by women who often wear wings in their commercials. One customer was knocked down and trampled, and had to be taken for medical assistance while security did crowd control. I ask you, in what world do you need a name-brand bra so badly that you're willing to step on another human being in order to get it?!

2012-11-24 01:54 pm (UTC) (Link)

No idea... O_o I like to give people some credit (not much, by any means) and say they get so hyperfocused at stuff like this, they do and ignore things they normally wouldn't. Not that it accounts for their lack of self-control over a deal, but still, at least it's better than just not caring about the fact that someone's seriously injured. Other times, sadly, I think people just show their true colors. :/

2012-11-24 02:01 am (UTC) (Link)

My cousin and I went to Target and Walmart around two in the morning. Still. Open but doorbusters were done so it was pretty awesome. Only problem was the walmart "PROMO" cases wth no price guide anywhere, but we found a scanner and I got all the seasons of Supernatural and Pretty Little Liars for $10 each *woot*

Plus a bomb ass zebra/hot pink santa hat!!!

2012-11-24 04:01 am (UTC) (Link)

I went to Walmart this morning, and had the same issue with the promo cases not having a guide. I think the employees were sick of the piles of discarded movies by the price scanners, because as I was leaving I saw them writing in the prices by hand on the cardboard displays.

dear customers,
if you don't like waiting in lines and large crowds stress you out, maybe shopping at Macy's the day after Thanksgiving was a bad idea.
also, when I'm in the middle of an 11-hour shift out in the cold rain with wet socks, I'm probably the wrong person to complain about how hard your day off has been. love,

We had so many people so pissy at us yesterday because we didn't open at midnight.

There are 5 other game stores within a 10 mile radius. They all opened at midnight. We've been advertising for two weeks now that this store was opening at 5am, and while yes the commercials say that stores open at midnight...they also said that not all stores opened at midnight.

10am-10pm shift yesterday, wooo. Hate Black Friday so much.

Other than going to work (thank the Goddess, no longer in retail....huggles to the kitties at the shelter) I stayed my happy self at HOME Thanksgiving AND Black Friday. We had our Thanksgiving dinner with family wensday night.
